Before + After: Family Room Refresh

High ceilings, clean furniture lines, bold COLOR, plus art and keepsakes that tell a story. These are a few of my favorite things and what a great starting point for this city family room refresh.

BEFORE

The kids stuff can easily take over, but it doesn't have to! The goal was to declutter, add a bold rug, and restyle the lighting and bookshelves.

After

A happy, bold rug choice, decluttering + styling shelves, and using toy bins to create limits on what lives in the room finish it off.

Shopping around town

One of my favorite past times (without children) is browsing local consignment and thrift stores, particularly on a leisurely Saturday (which are few and far between in this season of life!)

There are so many treasures to be had. I rarely buy unless I'm looking for something specific (minimalist here!), but it's fun to think about the stories that each piece would tell. I find a good deal of inspiration as I wander, in colors and textures, styling and mixing.

Buying secondhand is much easier on the budget and the environment, so it's my preferred method of making a room unique. Layering over time will make each space in your so much more meaningful.

If you want to get out this weekend in RVA, click here for a "secondhand finds" map around Richmond, VA so you can plan a trip in one area and hit up several place at once!

Before and After: Quick Bathroom Update

Sometimes you need an outsider to give you a list to overcome feeling overwhelmed! That's what I'm all about and I love, love, love helping folks prioritize and tick things off their list.

In this bathroom, just a couple quick things were needed to help it work harder, namely storage.

BEFORE:

AFTER:

Hemming the valence and adding happy pom-pom trim, hanging a little shelf they had on hand, adding some greenery (in love with these simple cement planters from local Frank Community Farm), a secondhand basket for under stink storage, and hooks for towels that are anything but boring.

We are still on the lookout for the right artwork for over the radiator, but I always recommend patiently waiting for something that speaks to you rather than something from Target just because it matches.

Instead, Support a local artist. Pickup something while traveling. Paint a canvas with your child.

What are some small changes that can help a room in your home feel more complete?
